Nara, Japan

The ancient city of Nara with its deer filled park, pagoda and temples dating back to the 8th century is a highlight of Japan. The city's previous importance as the capital can still be felt by exploring its many temples and shrines.  Visit the 15m high bronze Buddha in the hall at Daibutsu, part of the Todaiji complex, or wander amongst the Buddhist temples at Kofuku-ji. Try your hand at feeding the protectors of the city in the park, those quick and crafty deer.
